Project Summary: 'Peace with Earth' is a digital sculpture composed of three tablets, coal, and Spanish moss. I consider a collage of complex thoughts and overlapping ideas. Digitally, it incorporates satellite visuals from NASA in a 2006 year long timelapse. NASAs super-computer model shows how carbon dioxide in the atmosphere travels around the globe. When thinking about the macro movements of our emissions and how they travel around the globe, I suddenly felt connected to a larger problem. I felt and saw the breath of the earth. Not in the second it might take us as humans, but in the timespan befitting the life cycle of the earth. The coal was a testament to the substance that was the spark of this massive change in the natural systems of our plant. I found this dark matter to be captivating. Full of stories from the epoch of human development. Little did we know the consequences of disrupting the land. Ironically, coal is the remains of prehistoric plants. I was brought back to my childhood and where I was raised. In southern Florida, majestic moss hung from trees creating a landscape that brought be to a place of peace. Viewers are forced to circle around this sculpture asking questions about the connection point of the various elements. As our earth circles, so does the perpetual state of the climate crisis. This work explores themes of the Gaia hypothesis, how the human touch has transformed landscapes, and the battle we've been waging with our planet. I hope to spark conversations around harmonious living with the earth. I hope that we can we care for the earth in the same way that we care for our breath, our vessel, our spirit.
